2023 Softball Players to Watch

Josie Wise, Junior, Pitcher

Ever since she stepped on campus in the Fall of 2020, Josie Wise has been an integral part of Bethany Softball’s success. She is a 2x All-PAC First Team member as well as winning the PAC Pitcher of the Week multiple times. In 2021, Bethany won 21 games. Josie was the winning pitcher in 15 of them. In 2022, Bethany won 19 games. Josie was the winning pitcher in 15 of them. In two seasons as the Bison ace, she has been the winning pitcher in 75% of Bethany’s wins (30/40). That is absurd.

2023 won’t be any different. Last season, she broke the Bethany single season strikeout record, with 183 strikeouts. She looks to turn that up even higher in 2023. She has the potential to break multiple career records at Bethany over the next two years including: wins, starts, strikeouts, and complete games. Josie Wise is a name that will not only be tied to awards at the end of this season, but she is on Bethany College Hall-of-Fame watch. If her career finishes the way it started, beginning with 2023, she will go down as one of the best softball players to put on a Bison uniform.

Angela Brandel, Senior, 2B

For the past 3 seasons, Angela Brandel has been a constant in the Bison lineup, as she has been an impact player ever since she stepped on the field at Bethany. Last season, she was one of the top offensive 2nd basemen in the PAC, driving in 21 runs and tallying six extra base-hits. One of her best traits last season was her plate vision and discipline. She held a .371 on-base percentage because she drew 10 walks in her 91 at-bats.

Angela has a 5th year option, and is likely to take it, which would leave her in the Bison lineup for the next two seasons. Angela is the biggest run producer that is returning to the 2023 team. She has the experience and maturity as a player to be a leader for Bethany. Angela obviously has the talent to be one of the best middle infielders in the conference and she will prove that this season. 2023 is going to be a good one for the COVID Senior. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her name next to some awards in the spring. Remember the name: Angela Brandel.

Destiny Goodnight, Junior, UTL

Destiny Goodnight is one of the most consistent hitters in the lineup for Bethany. Last season, she appeared in 33 games. She recorded a hit in 27 of those games including 13 multi-hit games. In those 33 games, she also reached base safely in 29 of those games, only failing to reach base 4 times all last season. That is exactly the kind of production that is needed at the top of a lineup and it’s exactly the production that will continue over to this year.

Goodnight has only played one year for the Bison, but with two years of eligibility left, she will most definitely continue to make her mark for Bethany. She is one of the teams most athletic players and this athleticism directly translates to her ability on the field. Last season, she was All-PAC second team. This season, she will likely add another All-PAC team to her name. It would be hard to convince me the PAC has many utility players better than Destiny Goodnight.

Morgan Huey, Senior, UTL

Morgan Huey has had a tremendous career for the Bison thus far. She is the ultimate team player, willing to make any adjustment or sacrifice for the team, including playing multiple positions in the same day. While she is primarily a shortstop, earning All-PAC second team for SS in 2021, she will play more of a utility role for the Bison this year. She appeared in 34 games last year and recorded a hit in 27 of them, good for a .340 batting average and a .377 on-base percentage. She also reached base safely in 29/34 games that she appeared in.

For the past two seasons, Huey has made her name known throughout the PAC, as she has been a staple in the middle of the Bethany lineup and earned All-PAC in both seasons as a Bison. That doesn’t look to change in 2023. Morgan Huey is one of the hardest workers on the Bethany College softball team and that becomes evident when she shines on the field. She looks to have a tremendous year and her teammates know she will. Don’t be surprised when Huey is one of the top utility players in the area.

Lexie Vetter, Sophomore, DH

The 2022 softball freshman class had a lot of notable names that made a huge impact in their first season. One of those names was Lexie Vetter, who may have been the most impactful of all the freshman. She finished the 2022 season with 40 hits (2nd on the team) and a .357 batting average (4th on the team). It’s quite rare to see a freshman step in to the lineup and show the potential and talent that Lexie did in 2022.

And she is only a sophomore. She has a ton of room to grow and develop as she continues to get more comfortable at the collegiate level. She will, more than likely, be an everyday player again this season for Bethany. The sky is the limit for this young DH. She has the potential to add multiple more All-PAC awards to go along with her 2022 All-PAC Honorable Mention.
